Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

Dentist in Washington, DC

Myofunctional therapy is a treatment system, similar to physical therapy, to improve the muscles of the mouth, tongue, and face. This treatment can be used to assist patients who may struggle with a variety of issues such as:

  • Excessive breathing through the mouth
  • Deviant swallowing
  • Difficulty chewing or speaking
  • Posture restrictions
  • TMJ pain
  • Headaches and other tension
  • Snoring and difficulty sleeping

If left untreated, these Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) can develop into long term dental problems, speech problems, and sleep disorders. To combat these disorders, our team will customize a treatment plan that is best suited for your needs.

For many patients, Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy will consist of re-education exercises that aim to normalize proper facial functions. These exercises may focus around speaking, eating, and breathing, depending on each patient’s condition. Some patients may also require a frenectomy procedure, which is treated by utilizing our LightWalker® Laser.

If you experience any issues with breathing, sucking, chewing, swallowing, or speech, contact us today to see if Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is right for you.
